The Italian Greyhound
Meet Bella – Queen of the Italian Greyhounds
Bella is an Italian Greyhound, affectionately known as an “Iggy” – and she completely owns my heart. For the past three years, Bella has been a regular guest for Daycare and Home Boarding, and from the very first moment I met her at six months old, I was smitten. Like many young Iggys, she was in her “Velociraptor” phase – all puppy energy and razor-sharp baby teeth! Thankfully, that stage passed once her adult teeth came in.

Italian Greyhounds are a unique and captivating breed. They’re playful, vocal, and full of expression – especially through their wonderfully animated ears. Agile and graceful, they can sprint with surprising speed. That said, many Iggys, like Bella, can be a little nervous on walks. Their small size can make the outside world feel overwhelming, so we usually stick to quieter paths. Bella enjoys her walks much more when she’s surrounded by familiar doggy friends.

Cold weather, however, is an entirely different matter. Bella considers rain a personal attack and has perfected the art of dramatic protest. Warm clothes are essential in winter – indoors and out – and waterproofs are non-negotiable if there’s even a hint of rain. Otherwise, I end up carrying her home under my coat while she stays dry and smug. But when the sun’s out? You’ll find her basking in the garden, living her very best life.

One thing every potential Iggy owner should know: these dogs have long, delicate legs that are prone to injury. You’ll often see social media posts of Iggys in little casts – and unfortunately, vet bills can be high. Insurance is a must, and constant supervision is essential to keep them safe.
Despite their quirks (and sometimes because of them), Italian Greyhounds are one of the most loving breeds you’ll ever meet. They’re like Velcro – always by your side, always touching you, and always ready to snuggle. Bella loves nothing more than curling up under a blanket, ideally in bed under the quilt, glued to my side.

Toilet training? That’s another Iggy trait worth mentioning. It can be a long process – sometimes up to a year – and any progress made in the warmer months can disappear once winter hits. As pups, they can have some… interesting habits, like carrying their poo or gifting it to you (yes, that has happened). Thankfully, they do grow out of it!

Bella is a diva in the best possible way. She gets what she wants – always. One look from those big eyes, and I’m handing over the chicken. If I don’t, she’ll play dead in protest. She’s hilarious, dramatic, affectionate, and completely adored.
If you’re thinking of adding an Italian Greyhound to your life – you won’t regret it. They’ll test your patience, yes, but the rewards are endless. Iggys are funny, loyal, theatrical, and incredibly loving companions. And if you already have one, then you already know how special they are.I have years of experience with Italian Greyhounds and absolutely adore the breed. If you ever need someone to care for your Iggy while you’re away, I’d love to help. Get in touch to arrange a meeting – your little one will be in safe, loving hands.
